The song, "We Are the World", was released 36 years ago on March 7, 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie at the Jackson family's house in Encino, California. The song was sung/recorded by 45 of the most talented and well-known artists of that time. It raised over $50 million for humanitarian aid in Africa and in the US. On Good Friday, April 5, 1985, approximately 8,000 radio stations played the song simultaneously worldwide. (Source: Wikipedia) There's no doubt that having Michael Jackson---the King of Pop wearing an imperial black and gold-trimmed jacket!---involved helped make the project a huge success. He was at the height of his career and already one of the most famous entertainers in the world.
I was 14 years old when the song was released and my father had just passed away a few days earlier, on February 24. I don't remember the specific day the song was released, but I do remember how popular it became. Growing up with the music of the 80's was a unique experience. So many things in the entertainment industry were new and exciting. The entertainment industry has changed so much since then. Somehow, at least for me, just being part of the collective experience made everything seem more personal. The celebrities, especially, played a very important roles in our lives and often impacted our lives in positive ways. It was awesome to see all of these "stars" come together for a common goal and purpose. This song, in particular, brought a lot of joy, hope, and relief to people's lives, raising money to help famine victims in Africa and encouraging individuals like me, who were experiencing their own difficulties in life.
