The ornate brooch is gold in color and is decorated with white stars,. Michael Jackson was pictured wearing this same style of brooch while preforming on stage. Until 1910, various personalities, essentially from the nobility and aristocracy, were awarded this order. The Provisional Government, in October 1910, extinguished it as a military order, although King Manuel II in exile and the pretenders to Dukes of Bragança who succeeded him continued to use the insignia of this order.
The insignia of this order is a large star with nine points, enamelled in white and streaked with gold, having nine small stars of the same enamel, placed on the spokes between each of its points, and decorated with the royal crown on the upper point. It has in the center, on a matte gold field, the angelic greeting "AM" in a polished gold cipher, and in the circumference, on a light blue enameled band, the legend "Patroness of the Kingdom".
