How FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) Surgery is performed?

  • Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) is an ideal choice for people who are suffering from a high level of baldness. It is a traditional technique that is now developed with the latest advancements in its tools and procedure. Now, FUT is considered as a highly advanced method of hair restoration, as the way it is performed imitates the pattern of natural hair growth.

In the process of FUT, the Trichologist remove an entire strip of hair from the donor area, i.e. the back of the scalp. It is usually the hair loss resistant area where the hair growth is thick and consistent. The donor region from where the strip of hair is removed is sutured leaving a linear scar on the scalp.

The strip that is taken contains the hair follicles and this strip is then divided into grafts consisting of one or two follicles. These follicular units consist of sebaceous glands, nerves, a tiny muscle, and some fine hairs.

    FUT Procedure

The FUT method or the strip method of hair restoration involves the following steps:

    1. Initially, the local anesthesia is given to the patient.
    2. Then a strip of hair is removed from what is called the donor area, or the regions on the patient’s scalp where the hair is more resistant to balding.
    3. The surgeon and team then suture the area from where the whole chunk of hair tissue was removed. This leaves a fine linear scar, which can be easily covered by the remaining hair on the back of the scalp.
    4. With the help of a precise microscopic dissection technique, the strip is cut into the individual follicular units.
    5. The doctor then drills holes on the patient’s recipient/bald area and inserts the follicular graft units one by one.
    6. At last, a disinfecting solution is gently applied to the patient’s head and the donor area is dressed with a bandage.

The Benefits of FUT procedure are:

    • FUT method provides a better yield of hair as it allows the surgeon to implant a large number of hair follicles in a single session.
    • It is more affordable than the FUE technique of hair restoration.
    • It offers enhanced and natural-looking hair growth after getting the complete results.

The disadvantages of undergoing the FUT procedure include:

    • The patient may feel numbness, discomfort, or itching for around 3 – 4 days after the FUT procedure.
    • The patients experience shock hair loss within 2 – 3 weeks after the surgery. This shock loss is temporary and the transplanted hair will grow back naturally in 4 - 6 months.
    • Because of being an invasive procedure, FUT requires a longer recovery period to heal the wounds.
    • You need to take some extra pre and post-surgery precautions if you are opting for FUT hair restoration.
